“When I was in my late 20’s, I worked for a coal mining company operating heavy machinery—everything from small bulldozers to a massive drag-line. As you can imagine, the noise level was extreme and left many of us screaming to make conversation. Back then, hearing loss was not something anyone worried about.

Fifty years later, I am a grandfather of three fabulous children, and I can barely hear what exciting news they have to share about their day.

I found myself caught in a habit of just agreeing so I wouldn’t have to ask for anyone to repeat themselves.  ‘That’s wonderful,’ was one of my favorite responses, even though I had no idea what was said.

Common statements in my home would include, ‘Turn the TV down so I can answer the phone!’

My wife would say, ‘Look at me when I talk to you.’ And I found myself trying to read lips.

At the advice of my son-in-law, I actually went to have a hearing test and found the results to be ‘deafening.’ I have severe hearing loss, which is treatable with hearing amplifiers. I didn’t expect that with such a great loss of hearing anything could be done to help.

After my hearing test, I was referred to an audiologist within their office to try a few different models of aids. I couldn’t believe I could hear so much with this tiny thing in my ear. The softest sounds I have been missing for years, I could now hear.

Still a little skeptical, I worried about noise levels. The world doesn’t come with a volume control so I worried how I would control loud music or noisy restaurants.  ‘No problem,’ the audiologist said and explained how this type of aide adjusts.

A little more optimistic, I decided to take them home for a trial run.

I could now hear my grandchildren sneak up behind me and yell ‘BOO!’

We went out to a restaurant where there was clanking of dishes and roars from the guests, and my conversation was not full of platitudes and ‘That’s wonderful’ responses any longer.

Deciding to take this step was a journey of acceptance, but once I saw the difference a little hearing aide could make in my life, the decision was very clear.

I never forget to put my hearing aids in—they are easy to care for, and the follow-up needed in the office is exceptional.

Don’t miss out on what you are not hearing.  Having the gift of hearing is wonderful!”

“A happy camper,”

"Hi, my name is Dr. Neil Stronach. I served the community as a doctor of otolaryngology for 31 years.

Hearing loss is something I’ve struggled with for the last 15 years. I recognized my condition when I started experiencing difficulty with speech comprehension, which has progressively gotten worse over time. Everyday conversations with family, friends, and patients became frustrating. As a physician, clearly understanding patients was critical.

I knew the technical advances with hearing aids had come a long way, but having a hearing professional demonstrate what products and technologies were available greatly impacted my decision. The expert doctors of audiology at Montgomery Hearing Services helped me find the right hearing aids that blocked out distracting noise and brought in clear speech.

It had been such a long time since I could hear clearly. With my hearing aids, it is significantly easier to understand speech and follow conversation.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of hearing loss, as a physician and hearing aid wearer, I highly recommend you give hearing aids a try."
